EDP Renovables is the renewable energies company of the EDP-Energías de Portugal Group, which controls 95% of the Spanish company, HC Energía, formerly Hidrocantábrico. It operates in nine countries: seven European countries, the United States and Brazil.
EDP Renovables had 5,577 MW of installed wind capacity at the end of September 2009, making it the fourth largest wind operator in the world, third in Europe and Spain, and fourth in the United States. The company is also among the top three in the world in terms of installed capacity growth. Its expansion plan includes boosting its wind capacity to 10.5 GW by 2012.
In addition to the 5,577 MW of wind farms already in operation across eight countries, EDP Renovables is constructing a further 1,293 MW; 867 MW of which are in Europe and 427 MW in the United States. It also has a project pipeline of 28.6 GW.
Its European wind portfolio stands at 3,033 MW, distributed as follows: 2,169 MW in Spain, 596 MW in Portugal and 268 MW across several countries including France, Belgium, Poland and Romania. In the United States, the company has a total of 2,530 MW in operation, plus a pipeline of 18,062 MW.
