Movable mirrors to illuminate and give warmth

30-12-2011

They are like sunflowers. Throughout the day they follow the sun and allow light to be focused when, how and where needed to illuminate or provide heat in a home or office. The clever device has been invented by the company Solar MEMS Technologies.

The company, which began in 2009 as a spin-off of the School of Engineering (ETSI) at the University of Seville, proposes using sunlight at the whim of the user using an array of mobile mirrors that track the sun throughout the day and direct light to a desired point.

It involves an environmentally-sustainable system which its developers claim represents a solution in various environments, for example, from dark, damp or cold homes to the field of renewable energy and electricity savings.

This technology was developed at the School of Engineering of the University of Seville, where Professor José Manuel Quero and his team have been researching and developing solar sensors for satellites and for the renewable energy sector for over 10 years. In the past, the movable mirrors were installed as prototypes at the School of Engineering, but have recently been fitted to a residential building in the Triana district of Seville.
